Hussain Sajwani worked very hard after school for his father in the family variety store in Dubai. In fact, he put in so many hours that he told his father that he thought that it would be better to be a degreed professional when he grew up so he would be able to work regular hours, rather than be in business for himself.
Hussain was awarded a scholarship to the University of Washington in the United States where he received degrees in economics and engineering. He then returned to Dubai and worked for a time as an engineer for an oil company. However, that career was short-lived when he answered to an opportunity.
Sajwani formed a catering company that sold food to the US Army during the Gulf War in the region and the company did very well. The company is still in business to this day and it set him up for further entrepreneurial exploits.
In 2002, Sajwani formed DAMAC Properties, a real estate development company that would become the primary focal point for the Hussain Sajwani family. The UAE had just announced that the restrictions on immigration by foreign nationals were being lifted. This signaled to Sajwani that there would soon be a boom in the real estate market and he wanted to be prepared to take advantage of that.
Fortunately, the DAMAC owner is a master of promotion and marketing and soon the DAMAC name was all over the region for his new, luxury apartments that he was promoting. His very first project was completely sold out before he even had the opportunity to begin construction. And that is the way it has gone, for the high-end, luxury apartments and resort facilities that DAMAC builds are in great demand by the consumers of Dubai.
The sumptuous Versace interiors and Italian fashion houses are just what sells, and to date, DAMAC has built and sold over 19,000 apartments with another 44,000 in various levels of construction. He has even partnered with Donald Trump, of course prior to the US Presidential election, to build the Trump brand of golf courses and resorts at several of his properties.
